Thirteen

Even though the bike ride home wasn’t too far, Hazel was beyond grateful when the charming old house that had once belonged to Clarabelle came into view. The whole way there, she could feel her hair sticking to her neck. Trying to rub it away then caused her hands to stick to the handlebars.

The second she reached the house, she rode over the lawn instead of down the driveway, and she dropped her bike near the front door. She couldn’t decide if she should slow down long enough to get undressed once she was inside, or if she should head straight into the shower fully clothed and get the gooeyness off her before she did anything else.

She climbed the steps to the porch and wiped her sticky fingers as best she could on her jeans before she dug for the key to unlock the door.

She slid the key in, heard the lock click, and turned the knob.

Surprisingly, the door didn’t budge, and she almost slammed her face into the wood expecting that it would open as always.

She frowned and wiggled the knob again. Nothing.

“Really? Of all days?” she muttered and tried to focus her thoughts.

The ward she’d placed earlier should have allowed Peter, her mother, or her entrance without using another spell, just like it had the other days. But something was wrong this time. It was as if the house didn’t recognize her.

She tried again with the same results and then pounded on the door. “Mother! Open up!”

She'd have to suffer the embarrassment from her mother's teasing, but at this point, that seemed like a small price to pay.

Hazel waited patiently for several moments to allow her mother time to get from the top floor down to the door before she made a fist and pounded again. Thinking she might have better luck, she stepped off the porch and strode to the area beneath her mother's bedroom window.

Josephine was a deep sleeper, but it was nearly noon now, and she should be getting up. Hazel pulled the phone from her pocket and tapped to call her mother's number. The phone rang and rang, and her mom didn’t answer. In fact, her lack of response caused Hazel to wonder if her mom was okay.

Frustrated and worried, she dropped to a porch step to consider her options. If her mother had placed a more powerful ward on the door, which was a possibility, that would explain why she couldn't get in. In that case, even if she tried to break a window and climb through, that wouldn't work.

But how would she know if it was that or something else?

She tried her mother's number one more time. This time, Josephine answered immediately.

“Where are you?” Hazel said, not bothering to hide her frustration. “I'm standing at the front door, and I can't get in.”

“Oh, well excuse me, Hazel darling,” she said, sounding more than a little annoyed, too. “I didn't want to answer the phone while I was driving. You know, for safety's sake.
